Late last night, an updated version of Dogecoin Core has been released, and version 1.8.1 is now the latest client. Several bugs have been fixed, and paper wallet support is now available in the Dogecoin client. A small list of other changes is included as well, so let’s do a quick overview of what is new in Dogecoin Core 1.8.1.
Dogecoin Core has been brought in line with Bitcoin 0.9.3, and will feature a lot of bugfixes because of this upgrade. Do keep in mind that, while this client fixes a ton of bugs, this is not a mandatory update, but it is still advised to update your client anyway.
One interesting to note is how Dogecoin clients which are below Dogecoin Core version 1.8 will no longer be able to connect to clients on version 1.8.1. Most cryptocurrency enthusiasts will always update their client to the new version regardless of whether it is mandatory or not, and this is slightly nudging everyone in that direction.
Creating and accessing paper wallets is now available in the new Dogecoin client. Simply head to the “File” menu , where you can either generate a new paper wallet. This serves a dual purpose : either you can use this feature to hand out DOGE in a physical form to friends and family, or you can use it as a form of cold storage for your own funds.
An important annotation has to be made for DOGE enthusiasts who want to use this feature to create offline wallets for cold storage. Make sure your computer is not connected to the internet when creating a paper wallet, as this eliminates the risk of viruses capturing the details of your offline wallet (such as the private key).
Several improvements and corrections have been made to current client translations. While this is not a major issue for most people, these small “bugs” have to be addressed at some point in time, so it might as well be done in this release.
Most of you will know how Dogecoin has enabled AuxPoW, allowing this coin to be merge-mined with Litecoin. Several checkpoints have been added around the AuxPoW switchover block (371,337). AuxPoW support introduced some unreachable code in Dogecoin Core as well, and that code has now been removed.
