When it comes to picking your favorite Bitcoin wallet, there are ample offerings to choose from. All major platforms have at least one bitcoin client at their disposal, regardless of whether you use Windows, Macintosh, Linux, iOS , Android or even Windows Phone. AirBitz, a very popular Android Bitcoin wallet provider, is bringing Bluetooth LE Bitcoin payment to Android devices as of tomorrow.
AirBitz announced the release of their Android Bitcoin wallet version 1.4.2 earlier today, allowing users to pay for goods and services over a Bluetooth LE (Low Energy) connection. The addition of Bluetooth LE support is once again a clear sign of AirBitz’s main focus : making Bitcoin payments easy to use for both customers and merchants alike.
By using Bluetooth LE as a way of paying with Bitcoin, AirBitz takes away the hassle of generating and/or scanning a QR code. Even though QR codes are a neat feature for mobile payments, it still feels cumbersome for non-techy people. Especially considering how some devices will only let you scan a QR code for payments when you have a separate barcode scanner application installed on your device.
Bluetooth LE support is now coming to Android users of the AirBitz wallet as well, as iOS users have been able to enjoy this functionality since October of 2014. The reason for the delay regarding BLE support on Android devices is mainly because the Android OS did not offer this functionality until Lollipop (Android 5.0) was released a little while ago.
AirBitz has become the first (mobile) Bitcoin wallet to support Bluetooth for sending Bitcoin from one user to another. In fact, these transactions can be completed without pairing both devices to one another, as they just need to be in close proximity to each other. As of this writing, most Android 5.0 devices – including the Nexus 6 and Nexus 9 – will be able to make use of Airtbit’s Bluetooth LE integration.
On the topic of making Bitcoin easy to use and accessible to all parties involved : did you know the AirBitz protocol is cross-platform compatible between Android and iOS users? Payments can be made from and to either operating system without a hitch, making it a very interesting option for both experienced and novice Bitcoin users alike.
Bitcoin payments via Bluetooth LE is a protocol currently being looked at by Bitcoin Core developers, and may show up in multiple Bitcoin wallets in due time. AirBitz is looking forward to a positive and successful collaboration with the Bitcoin Core developers in order to drive the adoption of this protocol in other wallets and payment options.
