Today marks a very important day for Bitcoin and even digital currencies in general, as the Bitcoin St. Petersburg Bowl will take place in a few hours from now. Even though sports and Bitcoin might seem like an unlikely combination, the Bitcoin Bowl is the very first sporting event to take place under the banner of this increasingly popular cryptocurrency.
While I can understand not every Bitcoin user or enthusiasts is a fan of sports, and certainly not a fan of American Football, it is worth spending a few hours of your time to watch the Bitcoin Bowl. After all, most of us are involved in Bitcoin because we want to be on the front row when history is being made, and the Bitcoin Bowl will definitely help us get there.
The game which will be played in a few hours from now, will pit the Atlantic Coast Conference against the American Athletic Conference, as NC State takes on UCF. For those of you who may have never heard of these conferences, keep in mind the Bitcoin Bowl is a postseason college football game.
During the Bitcoin Bowl, we can expect to see several advertisements for BitPay, the main sponsor of this event. Judging by the stadium seating chart, there will be BitPay references to be found on the field itself. But BitPay is not the only Bitcoin-related sponsor, as Gyft is sponsoring the Bitcoin Bowl as well.
During the kickoff toss, a special coin will be used to determine which team will receive the ball first. Mike Caldwell, creator of the Casascius physical Bitcoin coins and bars, has designed a Bitcoin Bowl coin. Not only will this Casascius coin be used for the kickoff toss, but Bitcoin enthusiasts can purchase their very own Bitcoin Bowl physical coin on the Stryde Athletic web shop.
I will be watching the Bitcoin St. Petersburg Bowl live on ESPN tonight, and will try to provide some live coverage on the event itself. Do keep in mind the Bitcoin Bowl takes place from 2AM local time onwards, so I might be working a bit slower than normal!
