Today is a special day in the world of cryptocurrency and altcoins. Dogecoin, one of the most popular digital currencies to date, is celebrating it’s first birthday today. On this day in 2013, at 03:55:27, the very first block of DOGE was mined successfully. And what a year it has been for Dogecoin, the Shibes, and the world of altcoins.
While Dogecoin started out as a fun project, and was not taken too seriously by most people involved in cryptocurrency, things have turned around quickly. A lot of people took a liking to Dogecoin, including ourselves, despite a somewhat childish branding (or so we thought at that time).
Creating a new altcoin is nothing new under the sun as of right now, but a year ago, there were very little new coins coming out on a monthly basis. When Dogecoin was announced, it got a lot of interest from the community, simply because we weren’t floating in an ocean of altcoins at that point in time just yet.
And the somewhat childish image helped matters too, as a lot of novice users used Dogecoin as a way to get introduced to the concept of digital currency. Dogecoin has always been a relatively cheap coin, easy to obtain through various exchanges and platforms, and their community is both fun and serious when need be.
One of the main aspects which put Dogecoin on the map, is the creation of a ton of different DOGE-themed memes. On top of that, sayings such as “such coin, very Doge, much profit” and other variants of that saying, carry a lot of weight on the internet, where they become instant successes.
While Dogecoin is bringing a lot of fun and games to the table, they also have a very strong and marketable branding. Because of their huge community, Dogecoin also manages to get their name out there in the real world, where they have been contributing to various causes.
The DOGE community has achieved various successes, including a fundraiser for the Jamaican Bobsled Team so they could attend the Winter Olympics, sponsoring MMA fighter Austin Lyons, and last but not least, the Dogecar driven by Josh Wise.
But even in the cryptocurrency world, Dogecoin has always been a part of the conversation. With their addition to the GoCoin platform earlier this year, and enabling Auxilliary Proof-of-Work in order to get merged mined with Litecoin, DOGE is definitely here to stay.
While there are a lot more accolades to Dogecoin and its community compared to the short list in this article, I have a feeling a lot more will be coming in 2015. Judging by the trading volume on various exchanges, there is such interest, very profit, many wow in Dogecoin left!
