Bitcoin is being accepted by more and more merchants and retailers on a weekly basis. One thing that was still lacking for the “directory” of places or options to spend Bitcoin was magazine subscriptions. But that situation has changed, as subscribers of Linux Voice magazine can pay their subscriptions with a credit card, Paypal and soon with Bitcoin.
Linux Voice – Free software – Free Speech
It should come as no surprise that a tech-oriented magazine such as Linux Voice is among the first ones to embrace Bitcoin payments. Even though their annual subscription fees are quite low compared to other options, accepting Paypal and credit card payments remains subject to a transaction fee. With Bitcoin, on the other hand, those fees are non-existent.
In this day and age, the magazine market has been saturated with dozens of options revolving around the same topic. For example, car magazines are plentiful at all news stands; and even computer-oriented magazines are not hard to find. With so many different options on a local and global scale where do you go?
As far as magazines are concerned, there is a change in the paradigm. Customers are less inclined to buy a physical copy, as most media is consumed in digital form these days. As such, magazine creators have to offer their products in both physical and digital format, which is exactly what Linux Voice has been doing for quite some time.
Linux Voice is doing things slightly differently compared to other Linux and free software magazines though. First of all, 50% of all profits are donated to the Free Software community, developers and events. Secondly, all of the Linux Voice content is freely licensed after 9 months for community members and enthusiasts to share. Last but not least, Linux voice is one of the few independent magazines created by the Linux users for the Linux users, with no management or stockholders involved.
And that business model has seen quite a success. With more than 3,200 Linux Voice subscribers from all over the world, there is no denying this magazine is one of the more popular ones in existence. With payment options such as credit cards and Paypal (and soon Bitcoin as well) that number will hopefully continue to increase.
Subscriptions with Bitcoin
On Reddit, a post appeared where a user was notified that his subscription to Linux Voice would be expiring soon. At the bottom of the screenshot, it mentions how Bitcoin payments are an alternative way of paying for a renewal. However, subscribing to Linux Voice as a new customer does not give you the option to pay in Bitcoin (yet) for some reason.
We will keep monitoring the situation and keep our readers informed on when subscriptions with Bitcoin are enabled for members worldwide.
