Serhiy Tron, a former boxer, a persistent entrepreneur and the publisher of Bitcoin Magazine Ukraine, fights for stability in an unstable world.

When Serhiy Tron was born in 1984, his home city was known as Dniprodzerzhynsk, named for the founder of the Bolshevik secret police in the ’30s. In 2016, it returned to its historic moniker of Kamianske following a country-wide rejection of Communist suppression, but no matter what the city has been called, it has been the kind of industrial center that powers a country and forges resilient and hardworking people.  Read more...

Ukraine Raised $212 Million In Crypto Since War Broke Out, Study Shows

The conflict between Ukraine and its invading power Russia has been raging on for a little over a year, with no end in sight.

Both sides have been relying on every available resource to support their military and humanitarian activities, and it seems that crypto assets and technology have become the latest tools in their arsenal.

A recent report by Elliptic, a blockchain forensics company, revealed that both countries have been accepting donations in the form of digital assets.

However, the report also showed that the targeted nation, Ukraine, has attracted more digital asset donations than its invader.  Read more...

Crypto Accepted By 60% Of Weapons And Equipment Suppliers For Ukraine, Official Says

The use of crypto for donations and purchases is not a new concept. However, the ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia has shed light on the advantages of using digital currencies for military aid.

When Russia began its invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, the Ukrainian government turned to social media to ask for donations in bitcoin, ethereum, stablecoin and other types of cryptocurrencies.

The response was overwhelming, with more than 100,000 people contributing to help the Ukrainian military effort.

Bitcoin Magazine Ukraine, the authoritative source of news, expert opinions and various information about the industry in Ukraine, has announced the release of its first printed publication, “Bitcoin. Freedom. Ukraine.”

This first issue will focus solely on Bitcoin and its decentralized technology, giving Ukrainians the opportunity to truly dive into the Bitcoin rabbit hole. Crypto To The Rescue: Why The UN Is Sending War-Torn People In Ukraine Aid In Stablecoins

A growing number of human rights organizations from around the world are turning to crypto and blockchain technology as a remedy to challenges in underdeveloped or conflict-torn countries caused by a lack of financial infrastructure or insufficient identity verification.

Through a new blockchain-based humanitarian program, the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) will send cryptocurrency to Ukrainians displaced by Russia’s atrocities.

Stellar Development Foundation announced on December 15 that it has partnered with UNHCR to deliver USD Coin, a stablecoin pegged to the US dollar, to Vibrant digital wallets of eligible applicants.  Read more...

Aid For Ukraine Denies Transferring Funds With FTX To U.S. Democratic Party

The second crypto exchange in the world, FTX, collapsed taking down several companies in the fallout. The contagion negatively impacts companies, projects, and hedge funds and could have consequences for political actors in the U.S. and abroad.

Crypto Activity Exploding In Russia And Ukraine Due To War, Study Shows

Crypto activity in Russia and Ukraine is escalating as fast and as high as the missiles fired at each other in the face of an ongoing war between the two countries.

New York-based blockchain analysis firm Chainalysis released a study on the highly increasing use of crypto – a large part them illicit in nature – in Eastern Europe in an excerpt from its upcoming 2022 Geography of Cryptocurrency Report.

The noticeable increase in activity among residents of the two countries started shortly after Russia invaded Ukraine in February. 

As the war escalated, their economies began to suffer, pushing inflation upwards to suffocating levels.  Read more...

Ukraine Blocks Crypto Wallets Used To Fund Russia Invasion

Ukraine government has seized and blocked the crypto wallets which were affiliated to raising funds for Russian military campaign. According to Security Service of Ukraine, a lot of foreign crypto companies helped Ukraine seize the funds.

The agency at the moment is tracking the funds and also transferring them under the Ukrainian jurisdiction. It has been reported that a Russian resident had been raising these funds back to Russian forced which were invading Ukraine.

Security Service of Ukraine has used a specific mechanism to seize and block these funds in the wallet.  Read more...

Militias In Ukraine Raise $2.2M In Bitcoin And Ethereum To Support Russia

Per a recent report from on-chain analytics firm Chainalysis, pro-Russia groups in Ukraine are raising funds in Bitcoin, Ethereum, Litecoin, and other cryptocurrencies to support their operations. The report claims these groups have raised a total of over $ 2.2 million using social media platforms.

As seen below, most of the donations have been made in Bitcoin (BTC), Ethereum (ETH), Litecoin (LTC), Dogecoin (DOGE), and USDT based on the TRON Network. The report has linked these funds to around a dozen social media accounts.

Ukraine Plans to Fully Legalize Cryptocurrencies Within Three Years

The government in Kiev intends to legalize cryptocurrencies and comprehensively regulate the fintech sector as part of a new public policy developed by the economy ministry. The process may take up to three years to complete but eventually the industry built around digital assets should become a legitimate part of the country’s economy.

Parliament to Adopt Laws for ICOs and Smart Contracts

The new regulatory concept will be implemented in two stages. The legal status of cryptocurrencies, trading platforms and other entities dealing with digital assets must be determined in 2018 and 2019. By the end of next year, the Ukrainian government will analyze the market to identify trends and outstanding issues in order to put forward adequate proposals to regulate the whole sector.  Read more...

Bill Proposes Tax Holiday for Cryptocurrency Businesses in Ukraine

A draft bill introducing tax breaks for entrepreneurs and companies dealing with cryptocurrencies has been filed in Ukraine’s parliament, the Verkhovna Rada. The authors of the bill have called for tax exemptions for entities working in the sector until the end of 2029.

New Legal Terms

Ukrainian lawmaker Yuri Derevyanko, one of the leaders of the Movement of New Forces party, put forward the new proposal to relieve cryptocurrency businesses from taxation for at least a decade. After the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, many Ukrainians watched in dismay as much of the area’s wealth and infrastructure made its way into the hands of a select few.

Today, these oligarchs control their wealth through physical force and elaborate investment schemes that keep much-needed dollars out of the hands of everyday citizens. Alternative Crypto Bills Presented in Ukraine and Russia

Draft laws employing alternative approaches to regulating digital currencies have been introduced in Ukraine and Russia. In Kiev, a bill that classifies cryptocurrency as an asset, unit of exchange and store of value has been filed in the Rada and it’s supported by both deputies and representatives of the industry. In Moscow, the managers of leading Russian enterprises have prepared their own version of the law on digital financial assets which contains the legal term “cryptocurrency” and differentiates it from tokens.

Bitcoin Embassy & Bitcoin Conference Kiev Show Great Potential For Ukraine as Bitcoin Hotspot

Ukraine is becoming more and more open to the idea of digital currencies. As a result, the country’s first Bitcoin embassy has recently opened its doors in Kiev. The space, which was founded by Bitcoin businessman Michael Chobanyanu, is intended as a place where the Bitcoin community and Bitcoin Foundation Ukraine can hold meetings.

Furthermore, a special souvenir shop will sell different kinds of cryptocurrency-related souvenirs within the same building. Finally, there will be an ATM where anyone can buy Bitcoins.
