This article on where to spend Bitcoin is dedicated to our loyal readers in the United Kingdom, as interest in Bitcoin and other digital currencies is spreading like wildfire over there. While most people in the UK will have found several ways to spend their digital currency, Gift Off is a service that makes life so much easier in that regard.
Gift Off: A Brief Introduction
Gift Off is a service compared to Gyft.com, except that it only works for retailers based in the United Kingdom. And we are not talking about just retailers with an online presence here, as Gift Off offers a gift card that can be used at brick-and-mortar locations as well. With over 150 retailers to pick from, there is a little something for everyone who is involved with Bitcoin.
Citizens of the United Kingdom will recognize the bigger brands such as Asda, Marks & Spencer – a shop which I visit whenever I’m in London by the way – and Waterstones. But other brands, which are not tied to just to the United Kingdom, are represented as well in the form of Apple, Lego, Spotify and Zynga.
But perhaps the most interesting gift card of all – without trying to sound stereotypical – is The Great British Pub Card. This Pub Card can have a balance of up to 100GBP and remains valid for one year. Over 750 pubs nationwide accept The Great British Pub Card as a way to pay for food and drinks, and makes for a unique and perfect gift to family and friends.
Gift Off covers your needs ranging from grocery shopping to visiting pubs, getting your daily dose of caffeine [from Starbucks] to dining out with your loved ones. Gift cards are so much more than just a way of giving a gift to someone, they can also be used for the things you do on a regular basis, but paid in Bitcoin instead of traditional fiat currency.
And it has to be said, business has been booming for Gift Off so far. With over 4,000 customers exchanging their Bitcoin for gift cards to use for everyday needs, you can see there is an obvious demand for this service. But that is not all, as Gift Off is expanding their services to the Republic of Ireland.
We Have Gift Off in Ireland
Even though Gift Off offers gift cards to French and German customers as well [in the form of Amazon gift cards for those respective countries] the company is looking to expand their service to the Republic of Ireland. No specific gift cards for that country have been added yet, even though some of the gift card options are not limited to usage in England – such as Amazon.co.uk, Starbucks, Steam Games and Skype.
“Our main reason for offering our service in Ireland is that the community have asked for it. This is the same reason Gift Off was launched in the first place. Where we can, we always listen to the ideas and suggestions from the bitcoin community and where possible adapt our service to suit them. Many gift cards and digital currencies have been added to the site as a direct result of the community getting in touch through social media.” – Rusty Nash, Gift Off COO.
According to the information we have received, Gift Off is working on some interesting and exciting things that are in the pipeline at the time of publication. Gift Off’s hunger for expansion is far from stilled, and the team has big ambitions which they can hopefully live up to in 2015 and the years to come.
One of the major focal points will be on expanding to other European countries and increasing their selection of gift cards for customers outside the UK. In particular, countries where digital currency adoption is on the rise – such as Germany and The Netherlands – are on the Gift Off radar. But conquering just Europe is not enough, as Gift Off also wants to expand to the US, South America, and Asia.
