After the recent trouble some altcoin got itself into (you all know which I mean, but I’m not saying the name to avoid legal repercussions), you would’ve expected developers to name their new coin properly.
Unfortunately, some people still didn’t get the message it seems. I’m talking about MurrayCoin, the coin named after “Bill Murray”.
Oh yes, this is another coin which will get into legal trouble very very soon.
This coin is in no way, shape, or form an hommage to Bill Murray. It’s just using his last name to get some attention to this coin. While Bill Murray may or may not sue the coin developer, it’s not a smart choice , is it?
These kind of “named” coins will bring more and more unwanted attention to the cryptocurrency landscape, where countries and institutions will keep trying to get cryptocurrency either regulated, or banned completely.
Hey guys,
I love the site, it’s my go-to for the latest news as opposed to wading through dozens of threads on the forums. One thing I’d like to point out is a lot of spelling/grammar mistakes. Maybe a couple of proof-reads before release will avoid this issue. It’s not a deal breaker or anything but it does bother a lot of people when they see such errors. Perhaps hand off your articles to a friend to proof-read as this can help with errors that you can’t see yourself, like in essays.
Keep at it! 🙂
I spoke directly with a representative from Bill Murray’s charity organization who expressly and unambiguously confirmed that "MurrayC0in" (changing spelling so this post doesn’t turn into more SEO fodder for these people) has no affiliation with The Murray Bros. nor with Bill Murray, and that they are now looking into this matter further. Stay away, this is not going to end up like CoinYe, There is no element of surprise this time. This is an extremely cynical stunt to pull for personal gain and, from what it looks like, to draw attention to other "businesses" connected to MurrayScamCoin such as the mining pool they are promoting with it, which is probably one of the nameless ‘investors’ they tout. Bill is mostly cool with memes and all, and would probably not care much if it weren’t for the fact that it is not a harmless joke: people are going to spend good money and time on this nonsense and get worthless pumped-and-dumped-out MurrayC0in for their efforts. Laid back as he is, I can’t picture him wanting his face, name and reputation to be associated with brazen fraud.
The coin is definitely "namesdafter ‘Bill Murray,’" as you say, but I guess I was under the impression he was probably cool with it. I disagree that it attracts unwanted attention to cryptocurrency – in my opinion it’s a welcome change from the generic cloned coins out there. Without something new (like celebrities getting involved) the altcoin scene is doomed. People are tired of generic pump-and-dump altcoins out of Pakistan and China like "pizzacoin" and "moviecoin" – now THAT garbage is damaging to the public perception of cryptocurrency.
Remember baseball cardz back in the day? It was a booming market because people like to collect items of value, trade them, watch values rise or fall based on popularity and rarity, etc – now, people spend the majority of their lives glued to theif computers and mobile devices and they need a new kind of collectable. People don’t want to collect "Carcoin" and "Hamburgercoin" – now those are scams (and they are premined scams by design.) You put a lovable face and name on the coin and people have non-technical reasons to become interested.
Murraycoin had a fair release and there were announcements posted and wallets available to download before the first block was mined. I guess I don’t see a problem with having a celebrity back a fair, honest coin that is also raising money for the celebrity’s charity. I don’t kow if Bill Murray is endorsing this or not (it sounds like he isn’t, apparently) but I’m confused as to why people would try to make it into a bad thing unless they have an agenda they are fulfilling.
It’s fun, people are excited about it, I’m excited about it, and a lot of people are donating to a good cause. If Bill Murray is upset about this, he needs to get his lawyers on the case I guess.
I guess I will stop mining for now until we see what happens but I would be surprised if Bill Murray didn’t partner with these guys (if he hasn’t already) – he seems like a cool dude and clearly enjoys raising money for his foundation. This could easily be the most successful altcoin ever made because everybody loves Bill Murray and so far celebrities haven’t been endorsing coins (some have stated they don’t care but nobody is really embracing it.)
Like it or not, big names backing virtually currencies will be the next generation of cryptocurrency – maybe this won’t be one of them but I can guarantee it’s the future. They choose their cause to raise money for and they can leverage their fanbase and connections to gain supporters like we’ve never seen before.
To liken this project to some evil financial scam is insane – there has to be an agenda here. I have to wonder if you people were screaming at kids trading baseball cards too. Lighten up and enjoy life – nobody is forcing anybody to mine, buy, or sell Murraycoins. It’s good clean fun and it’s raising money for a good cause – that’s more than I can say for most other altcoins. Since when did the Internet turn into Hitler’s Germany? The worst possible thing that could be happening here is that these guys released this thing without permission; if that’s true, I guess it’s up to Bill Murray and his attorneys to decide how to handle it. I’d just be a little surprised to see him hassle with a lawsuit over something that likely hasn’t made a dime at this point and could be used as a huge fundraising tool for his foundation. I might be wrong – maybe he’s pissed. Either way, I’m not going to rant about something before I have all of the facts.
Trading cards for the digital age that build on a celebrity’s popularity, raise money for charity, and breath new life into cryptocurrency after the recent bad publicity – nothing evil about that. Sure I have a small investment to protect but I really feel like this hostility is absurd – get a life.
