Just a few months ago, there were a lot of companies working with Bitcoin in the United States, but very little companies in Belgium, except for Mobile Vikinga. Quite shocking if you come to think of it. Although there was another company called Takeaway.com (Pizza.be) working with Bitcoin , hardly anyone had heard about them though.
Piet, who is giving this small presentation at the Belgian Bitcoin Meetup here in Antwerp, went to Takeaway.com, looking for a sales job, which is exactly what he got. Piet’s job consists mainly of convincing local restaurants to start accepting Bitcoin.
Fun fact : Takeaway.com was ahead of Dell when it comes to accepting Bitcoin payments, which makes me very proud to be a Belgian.
It is important to know all of the restaurants are being paid in fiat currency, and most restaurant owners probably don’t even know about some of their customers paying in Bitcoin. Nor should they worry about it, as they receive their preferred currency in the end.
Takeaway.com operates in ten different countries, including Belgium, The Netherlands, Germany and Thailand. One of the advantages of Piet’s job is he can see how many people are currently accepting Bitcoin as a payment method for their business. He also has a grasp on sales numbers , and even though these cannot be disclosed unfortunately, let’s say they are fairly low.
Takeaway.com handles Bitcoin payments through BitPay, and Belgium has a certified patner for BitPay payments. It is unclear whether or not this Belgian partner is being used for processing the payments, but we will find out more about this in the future.
