Trouble seems to be brewing over in China, as two of the country’s major exchanges have been experiencing issues over the past 12 hours, and we are still awaiting official word on what is going on at this point in time. Rumours are circulating on Reddit that one – or maybe even both exchanges – have been compromised.
It is important to point out that both platforms may suffer from completely different causes for the downtime. The Huobi website itself is intact and works fine, albeit a bit slower than normal. However, their trading engine seems to have gone through a drought, as no trades has been executed up until a few hours ago when things started getting back to normal.
Bter seems to be a different case altogether, as their website mentions something about a security check which is currently ongoing. Needless to say, these kind of messages sprout concern throughout the general Bitcoin community, and rumours are rampant across Reddit and other Bitcoin-related messaging boards.
“We have to suspend all our services waiting for the security check. More information will be released as soon as possible. Sorry for the interruption.
No official information in regards to what the security check is all about has been provided to us at this time. According to one source on Reddit, which is unverified and therefore should not be necessarily trusted, one of Bter’s cold wallets may have been breached, and a total of up to 7,300 BTC may have been stolen. Once again, this has NOT been confirmed by Bter at this point in time.
UPDATE : Bter has officially confirmed 7,170 Bitcoin residing in one of their cold wallets have been stolen. The exchange is offering a 720 Bitcoin for the person who can help then retrieve these coins. All user wallets have been shut down for the time being and withdrawals will be sorted out at a later stage.

UPDATE #2 : Huobi has just posted a reply on this article, explaining they have not been hacked or breached. The exchange did suffer from a DDoS attack which affected a lot of their users across international regions. Deposits and withdrawals are enabled once again, and trading on Huobi can be resumed as normal.
We will keep an eye out for further updates regarding both Huobi and Bter.
