Chris, it is true that today the MAIDSAFE network is only running "vaults" in test mode on data center servers that they control. However, the plan is to make the vault software available generally after the stability of the system is proven under all manner of conditions. The objective is to make certain that the system is stable on all sorts of computing resources before rolling everything out. Recent example of Samsung's mobile phones is evidence that this conservative approach can reduce risk. The system is evolving and developing… Once the system is formally launched, ANYONE with a computing or storage resource or a cloud service will be able to run a node on whatever equipment they have and will be able to earn SAFE coins in proportion to the contribution to the network. For a very detailed background, there is an excellent podcast series called "SAFE Crossroads" by a person who goes by the name of Fergish. The technology is mind-blowing in its potential.
To be fair, the likes of google are underhanded enough to catch out even the most tech savvy of people. From personal experience, for example, I've found auto-backup of photos magically turned on again after an app update. I'd advise everyone to regularly check their settings. Also, companies like google have a bad habit of hiding important settings and moving things deep inside "advanced" settings. All of this, of course, because an invested user is less likely to switch to a different provider.

Some of these coins have a very long development cycle which bothers me because competition is fierce and so much can happen in that time
Lisk seems interesting. I wonder if it will fair any better in light of Ethereum's difficulties. It seems like quite a high profile thing in crypto. And as of yet there have been no big price movements in Lisk since the 'IPO'. I think at some point, when it does move, it will be big.
