A little while ago, I received a new physical Bitcoin to add to my small but growing collection of collectibles. In my possession, I have one of the 25 Ravenbit NODE .999 Silver Edition physical Bitcoins, which I purchased on the BitcoinTalk forums. Not only is this one gorgeous coin to use as cold storage, but it also a very collectible item given the limited quantity of just 25 coins.
Packaging : Envelope
One of the important factors about receiving a physical coin, whether it is a Bitcoin or any other collectible coin, is how well it is packaged. My Ravenbit NODE .999 Silver Edition came in a regular brown envelope, which has additional plastic padding on the inside. It also being kept together neatly by the clip on one side, and the “gluery” substance on the other side.
In order to avoid import taxes here in the European Union, the seller did a good job of not putting any value on the package itself. As I have noticed over the past few years, Belgian postal services love to tax any packages from the United States, regardless of the declared value on the package itself. As this had no mention of any value, they couldn’t charge import fees, which saved me at least 20 euro.
Packaging : Ravenbit Box
Inside the sealed envelope, I found a Ravenbit box wrapped in plastic bubble wrap. You know, the fun kind which you can squeeze to make it pop? It’s something from my childhood, so I might enjoy that a bit more than most “normal” people. Either way, everything is neatly packaged and wrapped, making sure it stays snug in place during transportation from the United States to the intended destination.
Once I removed the plastic bubble wrap and played around with it for a few minutes, I laid my hands on the Ravenbit box itself. While this is a cardboard box with a custom logo on it, it feels rather sturdy and will not damage easily. Rubbing your fingers over it gives a sort of viny-esque feeling, like a truly limited edition item is inside. Really nice work so far, and I haven’t even opened up the box yet.
Ravenbit Box : Contents
When you open up the box itself, the first item you will pull out is a plastic bag containing two plastic pieces. These pieces can be combined to form a display stand for the Ravenbit NODE .999 Silver Edition coin. And it has to be said, while this is “just” plastic, it feels durable and not the cheap kind of plastic you would get from other places. I put together the plastic display stand, rested the coin on the stand, and took the following picture :
Next up in the box is a valuable and important piece of paper : the Certificate of Authenticity. On this certificate, we learn that the Ravenbit NODE .999 Silver Limited Edition is minted by Osborne Coinage Co., America’s oldest private mint. Your very own piece of American history in the palm of your hand, simply amazing. Always make sure to keep this certificate near the coin and protect it from folding up or curling up the edges.
On to the piece de résistance : the coin itself. But wait, you first need to extract the silver coin from its official Ravenbit pouch. Doesn’t that look gorgeous? The fabric used for this pouch is some sort of felt, giving it a smooth yet sturdy feel. The embroidered Ravenbit logo on the front makes the pouch even more special, and it feels nice holding it in your hands. As you can see, a lot of work has been put into creating the perfect collectible package.
Inside of the pouch, we find the object this review is actually all about : one of the 25 Ravenbit NODE .999 Silver Edition coins. Each of these coins has a mirror finish, and they look absolutely stunning. On the front side, we see the Bitcoin logo in the middle, amidst an intricate network of Bitcoin nodes. Each and every node also has its very own small Bitcoin logo, showcasing the currency’s peer-to-peer technology.
On the back side of the Ravenbit physical Bitcoin coin, we see a square cutout where you can store a printed private key, and cover it with one of the security holograms included in the package. For me personally, this is a feature I will not be using, as my Ravenbit NODE .999 Silver Edition coin will serve as a collectible in its original state.
Speaking of security holograms, the package includes two security holograms inside their own little plastic bag. In the middle of the hologram, we see the Ravenbit logo (the raven itself, that is) with the text Genuine (on the top) Ravenbit (on the bottom). These holograms are very nicely designed and look absolutely beautiful. Almost too beautiful to actually use in my opinion.
Last but not least, each package comes with one Ravenbit sticker. Just like the cardboard box, the sticker has a vinyl-esque feeling to it, giving it a certain “aura of exclusivity”. The sticker is a great addition to the package, and overall, I am incredibly pleased with the purchase I made. The package arrived exactly as advertised, and I love the superior quality of every item included.
Considering you get a complete collector’s package, and the fact there are only 25 Ravenbit NODE .999 Silver Edition coins in existence, I was very surprised to buy this package for just US$79 (excluding shipping). International shipping, which occurs through USPS Standard Mail (US$10) or Priority Mail (US$20), is relatively cheap as well, compared to other offerings available.
If you are interested in picking up one of these gorgeous coins, either for cold storage or just as a collectible, head on over to this thread on BitcoinTalk. Just a handful of coins remain, so make sure to act quickly.
UPDATE : The Ravenbit NODE .999 Silver Edition has sold out.
